CONTRAETIQUETA - ODILON DE VARINE - WINEMAKER AND GOSSET GENERAL MANAGER

This is a series of interviews in which we wanted to give voice to people who have a lot to tell, people who, thanks to their effort, the love for their work and the things well done, have reached the top of their profession.

Inspiring people whose stories we may already know, but we wanted to know them a little bit more, to know their peculiarities, what makes them different.

Their seal of identity.

Their back label.

Today we want to introduce you to Odilon de Varine, winemaker and CEO of Gosset, the oldest winery in Champagne.

WHERE IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU ESCAPE TO, IF YOU COULD?

France is still a wonderful country, so I would probably escape to Brittany. Although if given the chance, I wouldn't choose a specific area, I would choose to go for three months to several different countries.

WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE LIKED TO INVENT?

It would be something that favors coexistence in society, something that helps teach how to live together and to interact harmoniously with others.

YOUR FAVORITE SONG?

I have five sisters, they taught me The Beatles when I was little, so Let It Be. It's the first one that comes to mind, it was the first one I knew.

But I'm a great David Gilmour fan, so I would also say the whole Live at Pompeii album.

Of course, I have to include in this question, Piano Concerto 1 by Frédéric Chopin.

WHAT IS THE WEIRDEST THING IN YOUR HOUSE?

My house is very special because I restored an old factory and now it is my home. But the most special thing is the love that is breathed and the people who live there.

WHAT TALENT WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE?

I would love to play the guitar. I imagine that the musician has the opportunity to travel when he plays. I would love to pick up my guitar and forget about everything by traveling.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP?

When I was a child I wanted to be many things, a doctor, a rugby player, a pilot....

But I think winemaking is a wonderful job. Wine can be a language. It can be a way of expressing what we think and feel. Wine is fantastic because you always do something different, every year you have a new challenge. Even if your goal is to do the same thing, it's always done differently.

YOUR FAVORITE FOOD?

My favorite dish is the one I can share with my family, with my friends, with my people. For me the most important quality of a meal or a dish is to be able to share it with the people we love.

YOUR BIGGEST ODDITY?

I don't know if it's a rarity, but one hobby I have is acquiring vintage cars, restoring them and participating in rallies.

SOMETHING YOU ARE GOOD AT AND NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT?

Taking care of the lemon and orange trees at home... I never buy lemons, oranges, grapefruit or tangerines. I have many fruit trees at home, I take care of them so that they grow and bear fruit.

IF YOU WERE ONE OF OUR WINES, WICH ONE WOULD YOU BE?

I would have a hard time choosing a single Marqués de Murrieta wine or a single Gosset Champagne. I can't say just one. I would say it depends on the time of the year, it depends on the mood, it depends on many things. I love to change, and I love to adapt according to the moment. For me to choose just one wine would be too boring.
