La Comtesse Albariño 2017

Since the 2009 vintage, a dream has been materialized in Pazo de Barrantes winery: La Comtesse.

It is a modern white wine which demonstrates the versatility of the albariño grape reaching new horizons, beyond the freshness and fragrant aromatic range it boasts.

La Comtesse 2016 shows an elegant complexity and aromatic richness, confirming the great potential of the albariño variety with a meticulous winemaking and a careful oak aging.

All the grapes come from Pago Cacheiro, a single vineyard of 1.5 hectares planted in 1965, in the heart of our Pazo Barrantes estate. The soil is sandy above granitic bedrock.

The harvest was carried out in 20 kg crates on 11 September, 2017.

After an exhaustive selection, the grapes are destemmed and gently and slowly pressed in a pneumatic press. The must is decanted by flotation to ensure greater aromatic purity and then fermented at 10oC in 3,000-litre French oak vats for approximately 60 days.

12 months in 3,000l. French oak vats, of which 6 months in contact with the lees and 13 months in concrete tanks.

Carabineros tartar, coral pearls and white wine gel. Baked scallop and langonstins risotto with crunchy marinated bacon and buttermilk. Fine clams on its juice gelée, white wine and grapefruit nuanced lime.

Grape variety: 100% albariño.

Alcohol level: 13.5% abv.

Bottling date: April of 2020.

Number of bottles: 8.560 bottles (0.75 cl).

Serving suggestions: Recommended service temperature: 13⁰C (55⁰F). Let the wine breathe for 15 minutes to show its full aromatic potential and complexity.

Tasting note

The amazing aromatic range of La Comtesse 2017 shows notes of ripe nectarine, quince fruit, hints of thyme, dill and fennel on top of its characteristic eucalyptus base. Full-bodied, savoury, structured, rich, creamy and a fresh yet persistent finish.

"Consolidated as a great bottle-aged wine, La Comtesse 2016 is balanced, very elegant, pure, and it clearly shows the unmistakable personality of the albariño grape". María Vargas, chief winemaker in Marqués de Murrieta.
